In 1997, Citrus Heights finally won its 12-year running "battle" with Sacramento County to become an incorporated city -- becoming the first incorporated city Sacramento County had seen in the 50 years previous. With some 85,071 residents according to the 2000 census, Citrus Heights is also one of the larger incorporated areas of Sacramento County, though it's still very much a part of the Sacramento metropolitan area, being less than 20 miles from Sacramento.
